Kandi Making 101
Ultimate Kandi Creation Guide: Tips, Tutorials, and Where to Find Supplies
Hey everyone!
I’ve noticed quite a few of you all asking for kandi recommendations, and since I make a lot of it myself, I figured I’d put together a helpful guide for those of you looking to dive into the world of kandi crafting. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to fine-tune your skills, this post should cover everything from string options to where to find the best beads and supplies. Let’s jump in!
💙 Types of String 💙
The type of string you use will vary depending on the project and personal preference. Here’s what I personally recommend:
For Singles:
Bead N Stretch Clear String or 1mm Fabric Stretch Cord. Both are flexible and work great for singles.
For Cuffs:
I prefer using 1mm stretch cord, but some people like clear string. The fabric stretch cord holds up better and gives a more sturdy finish.
For Masks:
Fishing Line is a must here! It helps keep the mask firm and structured. For size, I recommend using 10lb fishing line. This is the only project where I recommend fishing line, so don’t worry about using it for anything else.
For Other Kandi Pieces:
Stretch cord is usually a safe bet, but it really depends on the piece you're making. You can’t go wrong with stretch cord!
💙 Where to Find Pony Beads 💙
If you’re looking for pony beads, here are some of my go-to spots:
Beadtin.com – A huge selection of beads in various colors, plus special beads and different string sizes.
Ponybeadstore.com – Another fantastic option if Beadtin doesn’t have a specific color.
Amazon – Always reliable, and you can find everything from basic colors to unique ones.
Walmart, Joann’s, Michaels & Hobby Lobby – These craft stores often have a great selection of pony beads and perler beads as well.
💙 Perler Beads 💙
If you’re a fan of perler beads, these places are great to find them:
Perler.com – The official site, with a wide variety of colors and supplies.
Fusebeads.com – Another good online option for perler beads.
Etsy – Great for finding unique colors and limited edition beads.
Amazon – Convenient and usually has bulk packs.
Walmart, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Joann’s – They carry perler beads, but availability may vary.
As for supplies like pegboards, you can typically find them at craft stores like Joann’s, Michaels, or Hobby Lobby, or you can order them online.
Pro Tip:
If you’re working with perler beads, I highly recommend getting tweezers (preferably the ones designed for perler beads). They make placing beads on the board so much easier. Also, masking tape is a lifesaver for the taping method!
💙 Charms & Toys 💙
Charms and small toys are a fun way to add personality to your kandi pieces. You can find them almost anywhere! Many people love to incorporate non-bead items like:
Stuffed animals
Acrylic charms
Toys and trinkets
Slinkies
Jewelry
Glass beads
I personally shop for my charms on Etsy, but you can also find them at local craft stores, or even online marketplaces like eBay. Be creative – the possibilities are endless!
💙 Does Size Matter? 💙
The size of your kandi depends on personal preference and what you're making. For example, cuffs and singles can vary in size based on how you want them to fit. While size is generally up to you, fit is important if you’re making it for yourself or someone else. You don’t want the piece to be too tight or too loose. Always measure and adjust to ensure it fits just right!

Depending on what you want to make, you might need to go on a “scavenger hunt” to find the right tutorial, but trust me – it’s worth it!
