Break Away Carolinas

Breakaway Music Festival Spring Carolina Review

+ insights on other events nationally

Hey! I’m Sarah and I am going to tell you about my adventure to Break Away. Full transparency, I had just heard of Breakaway Music Festival when I booked a trip to North Carolina this spring. I casually looked up EDM events in the Charlotte area and found something unexpected- a fun festival experience with a stacked lineup. After attending one day of Breakaway Music Festival Spring Carolina, I couldn’t wait to share my experience + insights on the other Breakaway Music Festivals happening in Kansas City, Columbus, Ohio, Michigan, Boston, and the Bay Area

.

When I saw this lineup for one day and saw that the ticket price was $90, including taxes and fees, it was a full send for me, my partner, his mom, and sister 🚀🚀🚀 This was one of the best single-day lineups I have ever seen for big room house music, sparkly dubstep, and metal dubstep fans. I have paid nearly $100 to see Tiesto in Chicago, so I couldn’t help but wonder, how will this experience at a drag raceway be? Keep reading to see my pros, cons, and thoughts on the other summer events.

Pros:

  1. The fantastic lineup for fans of house music, dubstep, and some trap music

  2. Intimate outdoor festival vibes- with plenty of space to dance.

  3. Activities include a Ferris Wheel, paintball area, live art installations, roller skating rink, and a silent disco.

  4. High-quality production, including lasers, Co2, confetti, and large LED screens at the Main stage. The secondary stage gets an honorable mention for good visuals on their LED screens and stunning lights that bathed the crowd.

  5. Plenty of bathrooms, food vendors, and bars.

  6. Bringing EDM to often neglected parts of America.

Cons:

  1. Not the usual EDM crowd, the joys of bringing new people into the rave community come with the woes. From my best guestimate, half of the crowd comprised of EDM fans, and half of the group were there to “see what’s up.”

  2. Small merch vendor selection. I like that EDM festivals also serve as a space for vendors of pashminas, clothing, accessories, fans, and much more. This festival had one merch booth with items from each artist.

  3. Inconvenient location. This event was technically “close to Charlotte, NC,” but it was 25 miles outside of town at ZMAX DRAGWAY. I volunteered to be DD; parking was $15, and reasonably quick to get in and out. Being from Chicago, I appreciate festivals offering shuttles or being located near public transportation. If you fly into Charlotte for this festival, you must rent a car to access the event.

Final Verdict:

I will return to another edition of Breakaway in 2024 if they host events in North Carolina, and I will attend with my family. If you live in Kansas City, Columbus, Ohio, Michigan, Boston, or the Bay Area, I recommend you check out the events coming to your city. The event is worth the price and experience if you like the lineup.
